The Fox and the Cat

One day (Одного дня) the cat (кішка) went into the forest (пішла в ліс) and met (і зустріла) Mr. Fox (пана Лиса) there (там). “He is very well-known (Він дуже відомий) and very clever (і дуже розумний) as well as (а також) very experienced (дуже досвідчений),” she thought (вона подумала ) and spoke (і заговорила) kindly (ласкаво) to the fox (до лиса):

-“Good day (Доброго дня), Mr. Fox (пане Лисе), how are you? (як ваші справи?)”

The fox (Лис) was very arrogant (був дуже зарозумілим) and proud of himself (і гордим собою).

One day the cat went into the forest and met Mr. Fox there. “He is very well-known and very clever as well as very experienced,” she thought and spoke kindly to the fox: -“Good day, Mr. Fox, how are you?” The fox was very arrogant and proud of himself.

He (Він) spoke arrogantly (заговорив зверхньо) to the cat (до кішки):

-“Oh, you (О, ти) miserable (жалюгідна) whisker-licker (облизувачко вусів), you mouse-hunter (ти, мисливице на мишей), what have you learned? (чого ти навчилася?) How many (Скільки) arts (мистецтв) do you understand? (ти розумієш?)”

-“I only know (Я знаю лише) a single one (одне єдине),” answered the cat (відповіла кішка) modestly (скромно).

-“What kind of art is that? (Що це за мистецтво?)” asked the fox (запитав лис).

He spoke arrogantly to the cat: -“Oh you miserable whisker-licker, you mouse-hunter, what have you learned? How many arts do you understand?” -“I only know a single one,” answered the cat modestly. -“What kind of art is that?” asked the fox.

-“When (Коли) the dogs (собаки) hunt me (полюють на мене), I can (я можу) jump up a tree (застрибнути на дерево) and save myself (і врятуватися).”

-“Is that all? (І це все?)” said the fox (сказав лис), “I have mastered (Я опанував) a hundred arts (сто мистецтв) and, in addition (і, крім того), I have a sack (маю мішок) full of tricks (повний хитрощів). Come (Ходімо) with me (зі мною), I will teach you (я навчу тебе) how to escape (як тікати від) the dogs (собак).”

Then (Потім) a hunter (мисливець) came along (з'явився) with four dogs (із чотирма собаками).

The cat (Кішка) quickly (швидко) jumped up a tree (застрибнула на дерево) and sat (і сіла) on a branch (на гілку), completely hidden (повністю сховавшись) behind the leaves (за листям).

-“When the dogs hunt me, I can jump up a tree and save myself.” -“Is that all?” said the fox, “I have mastered a hundred arts and, in addition, I have a sack full of tricks. Come with me, I will teach you how to escape the dogs.” Then a hunter came along with four dogs. The cat quickly jumped up a tree and sat on a branch, completely hidden behind the leaves.

-“Open the sack (Відкривай мішок), Mr. Fox (пане Лисе), open the sack (відкривай мішок),” the cat (кішка) called out (гукнула) to him (йому).

But the dogs (Але собаки) had already caught (вже схопили) him (його) and were holding him (і тримали його) fast (міцно).

-“Hey, Mr. Fox (Гей, пане Лисе),” called the cat (гукнула кішка), “you are stuck (ви застрягли) with your (зі своїми) hundred arts (ста мистецтвами). If you had (Якби ви) been able (вміли) to climb up (лазити) like me (як я), you would have remained (ви б залишилися) safe (в безпеці).”

-“Open the sack, Mr. Fox, open the sack,” the cat called out to him. But the dogs had already caught him and were holding him fast. -“Hey, Mr. Fox,” called the cat, “you are stuck with your hundred arts. If you had been able to climb up like me, you would have remained safe.”
