Once upon a time (Es war einmal), there lived a sweet little girl (ein kleines süßes Mädchen) whom everyone adored (das alle liebhatten). Her grandmother (Ihre Großmutter) gave her (gab ihr) a red velvet riding hood (ein rotes Käppchen aus Samt). The girl wore it so often (Das Mädchen trug es so oft) and so happily (und so gerne) that everyone called her "Little Red Riding Hood" (dass es von allen nur noch „Rotkäppchen“ genannt wurde).

- "I would be happy to (Das mache ich gerne)," replied Little Red Riding Hood (antwortete Rotkäppchen).

One day her mother said to her:

- "Little Red Riding Hood, please visit your grandmother. She is sick and weak. I will give you a basket with a cake and a bottle of wine. Grandmother will be pleased."

- "I would be happy to," replied Little Red Riding Hood.

But the grandmother lived (Die Großmutter wohnte aber) out in the forest (draußen im Wald), half an hour (eine halbe Stunde) walk from the village (vom Dorf entfernt). When Little Red Riding Hood (Als Rotkäppchen) entered the forest (in den Wald kam), she met the wolf (begegnete ihr der Wolf). Little Red Riding Hood (Rotkäppchen) didn't know (wusste nicht) he was evil (dass er böse war) and wasn't afraid of him (und fürchtete sich nicht vor ihm).

- "Good day, what's your name? (Guten Tag, wie heißt du?)" he asked (fragte er).

- "My name is Little Red Riding Hood (Ich heiße Rotkäppchen)," said the girl (sagte das Mädchen).

But the grandmother lived out in the forest, half an hour walk from the village. When Little Red Riding Hood entered the forest, she met the wolf. Little Red Riding Hood didn't know he was evil and wasn't afraid of him.

- "Good day, what's your name?" he asked.

- "My name is Little Red Riding Hood," said the girl.

- "Cake and wine (Kuchen und Wein), so that grandmother will get well soon (damit die Großmutter schnell wieder gesund wird)."

- "Where does your grandmother live? (Wo wohnt deine Großmutter?)"

- "Where are you going, Little Red Riding Hood?" asked the wolf.

- "To my grandmother," answered Little Red Riding Hood.

- "What are you carrying in your basket?" asked the wolf.

- "Cake and wine, so that grandmother will get well soon."

- "Where does your grandmother live?"

The wolf thought (Der Wolf dachte), "the girl (das Mädchen) would taste even better (wird noch besser schmecken) than the old woman (als die alte Frau). You must come up with a plan (Du musst dir einen Plan ausdenken) so you can eat them both (dass du beide fressen kannst)."

- "Little Red Riding Hood (Rotkäppchen), look (sieh mal) how beautiful it is in the forest (wie schön es im Wald ist). Don't you want (Willst Du deiner Großmutter nicht) to pick your grandmother a beautiful bouquet of flowers? (einen schönen Blumenstrauß pflücken?)"

The wolf thought, "the girl would taste even better than the old woman. You must come up with a plan so you can eat them both."

The wolf ran quickly (Der Wolf lief schnell) to her grandmother's house (zum Haus der Großmutter). He knocked on the door (Er klopfte an der Tür).

-"Who is it? (Wer ist da?)" asked her grandmother (fragte die Großmutter).

-"It's me, Little Red Riding Hood (Ich bin es, das Rotkäppchen). I've brought wine and cake (Ich habe Wein und Kuchen mitgebracht). Open up! (Mach auf!)" the wolf answered (antwortete der Wolf) in a gentle voice (mit sanfter Stimme).

Little Red Riding Hood saw the beautiful flowers everywhere in the forest and began picking them. Meanwhile, she forgot about time and her grandmother.

The wolf ran quickly to her grandmother's house. He knocked on the door.

-"Who is it?" asked her grandmother.

-"It's me, Little Red Riding Hood. I've brought wine and cake. Open up!" the wolf answered in a gentle voice.

Little Red Riding Hood picked (Rotkäppchen pflückte) as many flowers (so viele Blumen) as she could carry (wie sie nur tragen konnte) and ran to Grandmother (und lief zu Großmutter).

- "Just press the handle," cried Grandmother, "I'm too weak to get up."

The wolf opened the door, went straight to Grandmother's bed, and swallowed her. Then he put on her clothes, lay down in her bed, and waited.

Little Red Riding Hood picked as many flowers as she could carry and ran to Grandmother.

-"Grandma, why do you have such big ears? (Großmutter, warum hast du so große Ohren?)" asked the girl (fragte das Mädchen).

-"So I can hear you better (Damit ich dich besser hören kann)," answered Wolf (antwortete Wolf).

-"Grandma, why do you have such big eyes? (Großmutter, warum hast du so große Augen?)"

"Good day, dear Grandma!" called Little Red Riding Hood, but received no answer.

Then she went to the bed. There laid Grandmother, her cap pulled down low over her face, looking somewhat strange.

"Grandma, why do you have such big ears?" asked the girl.

"So I can hear you better," answered Wolf.

"Grandma, why do you have such big eyes?"

-"So I can see you better."

-"Grandma, why do you have such big hands?"

-"So I can grab you better."

-"But, Grandma, why do you have such a huge mouth?"

-"So I can eat you better." As soon as the wolf said that, he jumped out of bed and swallowed up poor Little Red Riding Hood.

I would better ask (Da frage ich lieber mal nach) if she is okay (ob es ihr gut geht)." He entered the house (Er trat in das Haus hinein) and saw (und sah) that the wolf was lying in the bed (dass der Wolf im Bett lag). At first, he wanted to shoot the wolf (Zuerst wollte er den Wolf erschießen), but then he remembered (jedoch erinnerte er sich daran) that the wolf might have eaten the grandmother (dass der Wolf die Großmutter gefressen haben könnte).

Then he laid back in bed, fell asleep, and began to snore loudly.

The hunter was just passing by the house and thought, "How that old woman snores! I would better ask if she is okay." He entered the house and saw that the wolf was lying in the bed. At first, he wanted to shoot the wolf, but then he remembered that the wolf might have eaten the grandmother.

The wolf ran out of the house (Der Wolf lief aus dem Haus raus) and was never seen again (und ließ sich nie wieder blicken).

Perhaps he could still save her. So he grabbed the wolf by the feet and shook him until the girl and grandmother fell out.

The hunter, the grandmother, and Little Red Riding Hood ate the delicious cake together.
